OUR STORY

Born here, raised here!

Coen Markets, Inc. is one of the oldest and largest convenience chains in the Pittsburgh region. We began serving the public in 1923, and today we have over 50 locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

Our mission is to impress and satisfy our guests with every visit and make their lives simpler. We strive to provide the highest level of service, the best food we can make in kitchens, and the most comfortable retail environment for our guests to make Coen their preferred place to shop.

Standing for something good

Whether referring to how we treat our employees, how we give back to the community, or the quality of our product, at the core of our business is GOOD.

People-First Culture

Coen treats its employees like family, because we are one. This has been a key company value since the company was founded over 100 years ago. It was Charlie Coen, the grandfather of the two brothers, Charlie and Andy McIlvaine, that run the company today, who drove the company’s growth in the early years. Just like their grandfather, the two brothers recognize that the employee team is the greatest asset that the company has.

Quality Ingredients

At Coen, we never cut corners on quality. All of our food is made here. Our chicken is hand-breaded, our pizza dough is hand-stetched, and all of our sandwiches and salads are made in-store by our valued team members.

Commitment to Excellence

Over our history, the main constant you will see is change: change in brand, change in look, change in offer. To us, continually delivering excellence to our guests means continuing to evolve ourselves. We can and will always strive for excellence.

Fueling Our Community

If there is one thing that we’ve done consistently for over 100 years, it’s giving back. Just like the family who runs the business today, Coen was born and raised right outside of Pittsburgh. Coen believes there is nothing more important than giving back to the community where it got its roots. From helping the local youth, to education support, to hospitals and research, to supporting the local baseball team, Coen has given generously to various charities throughout its long history, and will keep counting!

100 YEARS OF GIVING BACK

Developing a positive legacy in our own backyard

Community and family support has always been a key Coen value, including financial and leadership support for education and health/wellness of the people in our market area. Coen family members have had a multi-decade relationship with numerous institutions and charities, and we will continue this support as a corporate citizen and as members of the community in which we grew up.

Washington and Jefferson College

Our relationship and support of W&J dates back well over 50 years. Our family member was a former board chair, we've provided significant support to endowment, and building construction, and are proud to be part of the W&J community.

Washington Park

For over 60 years, Coen has provided support for infrastructure to ensure the community has access to the park, the community theatre, and all sports venues.

Washington Health System

Along with significant support for infrastructure, the Coen family has had multiple members on the board at Washington Health Systems.

Washington County Community Foundation

Along with the family members on the board, Coen has support both financially and otherwise the value added projects and efforts of the Greater Washington Community Foundation that benefit the community.

Andy and I have lived through the various stages of our evolution and take pride in impressing and satisfying our guests in a distinctive manner.
